Ask a Roma Hills resident where the entrance to Sloan Canyon is and most will point you toward Executive Airport Drive, the long way around through Inspirada to a gravel lot on Nawghaw Poa Road. That lot has been fenced off since November 2024, closed by the Bureau of Land Management while it builds a new visitor contact station at the site. The agency's own closure notice puts the reopening at November 11, 2026, which means the fence comes down in about ten weeks.
Here is what the closure actually changed for the roughly 140 homes behind the Roma Hills gate: almost nothing. The Nawghaw Poa lot was never the neighborhood's real door into the McCullough foothills. It was the door for Inspirada.
The Trailhead Two Years of Detours Never Touched
Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area covers 48,438 acres of Mojave desert along Henderson's southern skyline, and the BLM's own trail map names six official access points: Hidden Valley, Petroglyph Canyon, Shadow Canyon, Anthem Hills, Mission Hills, and Quo Vadis. When the agency closed the Nawghaw Poa parking area, it rerouted the Petroglyph Canyon Trail and the 101 Trail to a substitute lot on Democracy Drive, still on the Inspirada side of the conservation area. That reroute is the version that shows up in every closure notice and trail app update, and it is the version that matters if your daily starting point is Inspirada or the airport corridor.
Roma Hills sits on the opposite side of the map. The community occupies a hillside parcel in the MacDonald Ranch planning area, tucked between MacDonald Highlands and Ascaya, backed against the McCullough Mountain Range itself. For anyone starting from that side of the valley, the closer legitimate entrance was always Anthem Hills park, where a parking lot off W Mission Dr feeds directly into the north end of the Sloan Canyon trail system and onto the McCullough Hills Trail, an eight-mile stretch that runs between upper Henderson and Anthem. That access point never closed. It didn't need a reroute because it was never the trailhead under construction.
So while hikers coming from Inspirada spent two years learning a new parking lot and adjusting to a 20-person cap inside Petroglyph Canyon itself, the practical effect in Roma Hills was closer to zero. Residents who wanted petroglyphs made the longer drive around like everyone else. Residents who just wanted the ridge, the wash, and the quiet kept using the entrance that was already closer to home.
What Changes in November, and What Doesn't
When the Nawghaw Poa lot reopens in mid-November, the Petroglyph Canyon Trail returns to its original starting point and the Democracy Drive workaround presumably goes away. That is genuinely useful news if you have been chasing the petroglyph panels, all 300-plus of them, and have been putting off the trip because of the construction detour.
It does not change which entrance makes sense if you live in Roma Hills. The geography that made Anthem Hills the shorter drive before the closure is the same geography after it. The reopening resolves a two-year inconvenience for one side of the conservation area without touching the side that borders this neighborhood. If anything, the closure was a two-year experiment that answered a question residents might not have thought to ask: which trailhead is actually yours. The construction fence gave a clear answer by removing the alternative for everyone except the people who never needed it.
The Loop After the Trail
The rest of a Roma Hills weekend tends to run downhill from there, literally and otherwise. Desert Willow Golf Course sits close enough to treat as a default, an 18-hole, par-60 layout designed by Billy Casper and Greg Nash that measures about 3,800 yards and includes an onsite restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so the round can turn into a meal without a second stop.
DragonRidge Country Club is the other half of that routine, close enough to be a five-minute drive from the gate, and enough Roma Hills residents join that it functions as the neighborhood's informal clubhouse even though it sits outside the gates. Between the two courses, a lot of the golf a Roma Hills household plays in a given month happens without leaving a five-minute radius.
Dinner closes the loop at Chef's Roma Kitchen, the original location on West Horizon Ridge Parkway between Valley Verde and Arroyo Grande, in the same Horizon Ridge corridor that also serves MacDonald Highlands next door. The restaurant changed hands in December 2023 after longtime chef-owner Piero Broglia passed away, and Ricardo Romo, who spent years cooking at Strip kitchens including Michael Mina's Seablue and Mastro's Ocean Club, took over with two partners and gave the space a decor refresh while keeping the name. It is open nightly until 2 a.m., which makes it one of the few sit-down options in the area still serving a full menu and bar service well past a typical dinner hour. As of this year it holds 4.7 stars across more than 300 Google reviews, the kind of consistency that turns a restaurant into a habit rather than an occasional stop.
None of these three stops required the Nawghaw Poa lot to be open. That is the actual shape of a Roma Hills weekend: a trail entrance that never closed, a golf course five minutes from the gate, and a late kitchen that has been serving the same corridor since before the current owners took over. The two-year construction project happening down the hill in Inspirada was real news for that side of Henderson. From Roma Hills, it was a story about someone else's parking lot.
The Practical Takeaway
If you have been avoiding Sloan Canyon because of the closure, you were likely solving the wrong problem. The Anthem Hills entrance off W Mission Dr has been open the entire time, feeds the same McCullough Hills Trail system, and sits closer to Roma Hills than the lot everyone has been reading about. When the Nawghaw Poa reroute ends this November, it will matter most to the households on the Inspirada side who never had another option.
